Relax, with your back straight and sit for a moment like this.

Make this decision: I will use this moment to be the best I can be: attentive, kind and open-minded, so that I can help myself and everyone else.

Then breathe naturally, relax every muscle deeply from within, and just be present. Try this for a while and see what happens. Don’t come up with a lot of ideas about meditating and about meditation. Just allow yourself to be. That is the most important thing.

Every time you forget what you’re doing, you can just start all over again. Hold after five minutes and wish: May the goodness of being attentive, kind and open-minded benefit both myself and everyone else.

In this way, little by little, you get a personal experience of what it is actually like to simply be present without doing anything, in a state of readiness.
